Woke up late today, we were supposed to go to American Hospital for my wife follow up visit and after that to the nearest park for small picnic. Called them up just to make sure the paperworks are in order. Not surprisingly they weren't so I had to re-schedule. I applied 1 day leave just for this. Wasted!... Hang on....
"Yang ! Tukar plan lah.. kita pegi wadi pulak. ..Shuwaihah !". Made a few phone calls to see if anyone else interested. "Last minutelah bro mana sempat! " replied one. I don't blame them, this is a good case of " Dah nak terbe*** baru cari toilet" scenario. Hmm...To go or not to go .I'd prefer to have one more car just as precaution but what the heck it's a weekend so there are bound to be a few 4WDs roaming around that area, I reasoned quietly. It's almost noon.
A quick prayer and minutes later we're out of the garage speeding towards Hatta. The sky looked a bit cloudy but not dark enough to deter us. The past two weeks saw the most rain for the whole year and the effect can be seen already. Along the road small bushes starting to sprout in the areas that used to be quite...desert-ed!
Enter Shuwaihah
Around an hour later we reached the Al Fay area where we made the final turn to Shuwaihah where the normal road ends and the gravel road starts. “Where we goin’ Papa? “ ask my 3 year old. “To the hills Fairuz ! To the hills! “ .. and off we went.
Fifteen minutes later my GPS unit indicated that we have reached the turn off to the first spot of our destination. It was a tight right turn through a small track which barely fits my 4WD and followed by another tight turn to the left. There lies a small plains big enough for three 4WDs to park .The sound of water gushing can be heard already. “ Sampai dah !”
After a bit of climb down lugging our picnic basket and mat we were at the bed of the rocky river .
I was already upset. Not only because I just realized that my son was already wet without getting into his swimsuit , but also the sight of litter in the otherwise beautiful area. There were empty plastic bottles, unburnt firewood and empty plastic bags. The thought of dumping a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs into a small pool the size of wash basin filled with small fishes baffles me. Dark cloud started forming above me and within me. I wondered if the trip was worth it.
What cheered me up though was the sight of water brought by the recent rainfall. The wadi was filled with running water instead of stagnant pools during the dry summer season. The sight and sound of small waterfalls were refreshing for a change. Waterfalls in the desert .. ha ! wait till you tell the guys back home.
Lots of water ! That’s me…. standing! Very deep!
And waterfalls too!
Another one!
Trickles of rain started to fall, I signalled my other half to pack up and rushed the kids to get ready. This is the last place you want to be when the rain starts to fall. Flash flood in wadis are common and people drowning are not unheard of. We quickly pack our gear up into our vehicle and left the area.
We took a different route to exit the wadi area. We turned deeper into Swaihah region instead of backtracking from where we came from. This way my family get to see more stuff. A few hundred meters later we reached the lowest and the widest part of the river bed. I mentioned river because the area looked like there was a big river here not long ago. Here we turned right following the river bed driving upstream as far as we can. We passed a few ‘mat sallehs’ having picnic followed by a few local Arabs further up waving at us.
River bed starting to look like one. Drive, drive, drive your car gently up the stream… merrily , merrily ….
When the terrain became too rocky and rugged for our vehicle to pass we parked and found a wide flat spot laid with pebbles and small rocks. “ Good for camping .” My wife suggested. I raised my palms “No rain already ! Bring out the coffee.” “ And the mat and Nasi Goreng too !”. “Makan lagi !” my wife replied. The kids were already rushing to the water. Everyone was starting to have a good time .
Small stream just nice for the kids
Just as we finished our afternoon coffee, rain started to trickle again signalling us it was time to go. As we were leaving we met two Caucasian ladies in a Jeep Wrangler followed by a couple in a white Prado headed towards the spot where we came from. We exchanged greetings and parted ways.
Along the way we stopped here and there at a few nice spots and took our sweet time enjoying the scenery and having coffee. We also had a chance to scout around for suitable places for camping. There are actually quite a few spots that are suitable for campsites on low or high ground. Perhaps next time we’ll come again and camp here.
More nice spots .. more coffee breaks. Potential Campsite
Having a good time.
Around five o clock afternoon sun suddenly reared its face cheering us up as we were leaving the area .
On the way out we were greeted with another pleasant surprise. A big pool of water by the main road big enough to swim in! Big enough for fish farm!
At the end of the day…after six hours of journey, everyone was tired but happy. It turned out to be a good trip after all! Faisal Zaid
