dari Emirates Today Online:

Sharjah residents are worried about the safety of their cars after a large number of thefts have been reported from National Paints and Al Nahda areas.

The latest theft was reported in the National Paints area on Saturday morning.

“I was shocked to learn that my 2005 model Toyota Prado [Dubai Registration E5143] was missing from the car park on Saturday morning.

“After searching the entire area, I went to the police station and filed a case,” said Mohammed Haji, one of the victims.

He said the car, worth Dh120,000, was missing and he was waiting for a police investigation to be completed before he claims insurance to buy a new one.

“Most likely the theft happened between 2am and 6am on Saturday,” he added.

The victim, who lives in Juma Al Majid building near Bin Ladin roundabout, said a number of vehicles are parked there. “I do not know how they opened the door. There was no watchman in the area and my car did not have any alarm,” he said.

The victim said he has filed a case with Sharjah Police.

“From the police officials I learned that about 16 cars have been stolen from different parts of Sharjah in recent months. Another attempt targeted a Toyota four-wheel drive from the same area.”   A Sharjah Police source said cases of theft are handled by the police station where the incident takes place.

Police have advised residents to be cautious and warned them not to park cars in secluded areas and to install alarm systems as a safety precaution against car theft.

Recently, residents caught a suspect who was attempting to break into a Toyota car.

“He was carrying a large bunch of keys.

“Two onlookers caught him and handed him over to the police,” said Haji.

Noushad, an engineer working in Dubai, said his Toyota Corolla has been miss ing since December 10. “I left my new Toyota Carolla [Dubai registration G78121] in the car park of my building near the KFC in Al Nahda.

“I have filed a case with the Buhaira Police station. I have been told by them that an investigation is going on but it may take some time.

“I cannot claim insurance because the investigation is ongoing. I am currently using a vehicle from a rental agency,” he said.

“I believe that about five cars were stolen from the car park of the next building in November 2006,” he said.

The victims included an Indian man from Andhra Pradesh state.
