Abu Dhabi, UAE Buat pertama kalinya UAE menjuarai kejohanan bolasepak Khaleej (Gulf Cup) menewaskan jiran dan musuh tradisi Oman 1-0. Sepakan first timer player of the tournament (dan Top scorer) Ismail Mattar menggamatkan stadium Zayed Al Nahyan malam tadi.

UAE yang tewas 3 perlawanan terakhir dalam perlawanan mereka menentang Oman (termasuk perlawanan pembukaan 2-1) mengejutkan Oman dengan permainan licik.

Oman yang bermain buat kali ke-2 berturut dalam perlawanan akhir sekali lagi pulang kecewa. D edisi sebelumnya, mereka juga tewas pada tuan rumah, Qatar. Dua percubaan berturut oleh penyerang Oman berjaya dselamatkan oleh custodian UAE.

Ismail yang khabarnya menjadi perhatian beberapa kelab Inggeris dengan tenang membuat first timer d sekitar kotak penalti, menewaskan penjaga gol Oman (yang juga penjaga gol kelab Inggeris, Bolton).

Selepas kemenangan UAE, beberapa jalan utama d Dubai dan Abu Dhabi bertukar menjadi street party, dengan aksi kereta berhias (dan beragam!). Street party khabarnya akan berterusan untuk beberapa malam dengan aksi kereta berhias dan pekikan kemenangan.

Kemenangan manis ini adalah kemenangan lumayan - Dhs.5 juta akan dkongsi sama skuad UAE oleh beberapa korporat (antaranya Dubai Holdings dan Etisalat). Khabarnya banyak lagi hadiah lumayan bakal d terima dari pembesar negara!

Enter the rumormill: VW won bid to control Proton

Motor Authority came across an article in XFN-Asia that says VW won the bidding contest for controlling stake of Malaysia's Proton. Although the report is light on details, it seems that a source who was privy to the deal confirmed that Volkswagen will be purchasing the required 51-percent of Proton's manufacturing arm and that an official statement will be released on February 8th.

If the source is to be trusted, that means that both GM and PSA Peugeot-Citroen were ousted from the runnings, which is little surprise, as VW has had a long standing relationship with the state-owned automaker.

Cat in a Soup?

Dubai, UAE 7 Days today highlighted the latest menu hitting Dubai's growing appetite for the latest delicacies! Cat meat! BBQ, soup, or even eat it raw! Where can you have 'em? Jebel Ali labour camp!

One labourer living at Jebel Ali industrial Area 2 told 7 Days:"We all know it's happening in some of the camps but people don't like to talk about iy. I saw some workers picking up stray cats from Satwa in order to eat them."

"People from different parts of the world live in these camps and some of these people like eating these animals. Who are we to stop them?" one worker said.

The front page news (printed version) however, is not available online (as at 3:30pm Dubai time!).

Noraini said the visits help enrich the children's life, removing the temptation to cocoon themselves into their own communities.

"We are global. We come from many countries and we learn about each other. Otherwise, it would be like not even living in another country, forming a mini-London, or mini-Malaysia," said the mother of five, who hails from Malaysia.

"It's really fun," said 10-year-old Farhah Mohammad Hasnol enthusiastically. For her, the group is not only her ticket to understanding the UAE better, but also a chance to form deep friendships.

Pencakar Langit IJM Kebakaran?

Dubai, UAE Bangunan pencakar langit binaan syarikat Malaysia, IJM dlapurkan kebakaran lewat petang tadi. Menurut lapuran Gulf News, 2 pekerja d bangunan Fortune Tower dsahkan terkorban manakala 37 lagi cedera. Wakil myUAE sempat menerima lapuran dari beberapa saksi d Shaikh Zayed Road yang melapurkan keadaan sesak dengan kehadiran beberapa buah pasukan keselamatan dan helikopter. Projek Fortune Tower, terletak d kawasan Jumeirah Lake adalah salah satu projek IJM (bernilai Dhs.116juta) yang terdapat dalam web IJM.
