Syabas Malaysia!

SHAH ALAM: Malaysia are champions of the Merdeka Tournament again after a lapse of 14 years.

Lead3008_safee In an exciting final of the 39th edition of the tournament played in front of 40,000 fans at the Shah Alam Stadium last night, Malaysia defeated defending champions Myanmar 3-1. It was the 11th time that Malaysia won the title in the series.

Myanmar had no answer to a spirited Malaysia and conceded goals to Mohd Zaquan Adha and Safee Sali in the 12th and 60th minute respectively. And Aung Myo Thant put the ball into his own net in the 56th.

Substitute Tun Tun Win pulled a goal back for Myanmar in the 73rd minute. The match also saw Myanmar reduced to 10 men with the sacking of Kyaw Khing Win in the 87th minute.

The victory for the national Under-23 boys preparing for the Korat SEA Games in December was sweet revenge for the 1-2 defeat by Myanmar in the group stage.

Malaysia started without influential skipper Mohd Shukor Adan, who was down with a groin injury, leaving only one senior player in the side – centreback Norhafiz Zamani Misbah.

Dubai Merdeka Race: Hamiz Wins!

SPECIAL REPORT: REDZA JAMIL  Bersedia We started with the short briefing just after 9.30pm all eager to go.  Karts were assigned, adrenalin pumping into our veins.

As the engines start we sat in our karts in the pit lane waiting.  Sweat starting to trickle in our racing suits as the marshal waves us to go. The qualifying session is on!

We had five flying laps each and some literally went flying - over the kerbs of course.

As we finished this session we lined up before the grid waiting, wondering - who's in pole position?

As it turned out it was Hamiz, with yours truly being second fastest. Third fastest was Razmyn from Abu Dhabi.

Now we're lining up for Race One - the sprint race.  8 laps.  From a standstill the race was flagged.  Go! Go! Go!

Tn_dsc_1384a Around the first corner the order was Hamiz, Razmyn and Redza.  All three kept the pace and the short race came to an end in that order.

Fire @ Sharjah Port

Sharjah, UAE 18_nt_shar_fire_hh_4_5 Sharjah closed its main cargo port on Saturday after a major fire overnight at a lubricants warehouse, police and port authorities said.

Major Jumaa al-Leem, head of Sharjah police public relations, told Reuters that Port Khalid would be completely closed for the day and it was still unclear when shipping would resume.

He said the fire, which started around 10:30pm at the oil storage facility of Emirates Lube Oil Co. was large but had been brought under control, though emergency crews were still trying to extinguish the last remnants.

The fire caused acute damage to an oil storage facility and to berths, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Port Khalid is the biggest of Sharjah's ports and handles container goods, bulk cargo and petroleum products.
