By Faisal ZaidI was invited to join Kapt Amin and Kapt Busri on a short overnight desert trip on 22nd November to the Lahbab dunes along Dubai-
Hatta route. What do you expect a man who just finished a gruelling 12
hr night shift with 3 screaming kids and a 5 months pregnant wife would
say? Yes! Of course!
Fortunately we always have our
camping kit more or less quite readily available. I managed to load the
car within 45 minutes compared to my wife who took 2 hrs to pack
them (hmm something is out of place here). As soon as the kids got
home a quick hosedown and I quickly shooed them into the car. Time is
crucial here because it will either be a smooth start to our trip or a
'nice' night navigation experience to the campsite. I believe our
'myUAE 4x4 newbie offroaders' can relate to that experience.
We were joined by Matt and family and our Indonesian friend wak Garibaldi and family. Apparently it turned out to be a 'Ganu connection' camping party. Amin and me are from Terengganu, so are Busri's wife and Matt's wife. Macam pakat-pakat je. Our group became quite big since Busri had some visitors to join in as well.

Friday 16th November 2007, Lahbab Desert, Dubai, UAE By Khairul Affendi As per schedule, we gathered at Rahidiya. Soon after Asar Prayer, we headed to a petrol station nearby Dubai Silicon Oasis to team up with few others while filling up fuel and including some grubs for ourselves.
Not long after that - circa 4.30pm we made a stop at Lahbab Desert for a briefing by the chef-de–mission which was very sound and vital for the trip. Being an expert and widely experienced in the particular condition, Capt Amin provided us guidance and techniques, among others for us to take down notes. Should we do it via driving school, we were sure to take out some dirham out of our pockets!
We were then asked to deflate the 4x4 tyres - within 16 to 18psi, in order to have more grip, driving in the loose sandy desert. After all the procedures were completed, we then charged the vehicles in a single file formation headed by the chef-de-mission. Faisal - being the excursion's subaltern, was last in the row in order to manage and supervise the convoy from rear besides being the sweeper.
